Bob Hutton's Tatooshes

Roger Megroz asked: Who owned Tatoosh when you, Peirs … Sailed on it?
Bob Hutton owned a number of boats named Tatoosh, home port Friday Harbor, WA, while living in Seattle. and for many years after the Hutton family had moved to Connecticut. Bob was CEO of Lone Star Industries, based in Greenwich.
The first Tatoosh I raced aboard in the early 1970s was a Chance 44, that looked and sailed (sideways) like Gannet. We did the big overnights in those years; Edlu, BI, Vineyard.
In 1978, Piers raced to Bermuda on Hutton’s black Tatoosh, a Palmer Johnson-built Frers 47, a sister ship of hot German Frers-designed boats of the day Arieto, Scaramouche, Destination, Merrythought, et al.
In September 1979, I was invited to join an intense year-long campaign aboard Hutton's new blue Tatoosh, a very modern Frers 46 built at the Minneford Yacht Yard on City Island.
On launching day guests and crew took it all in. The great designer German Frers described for the crew the composite materials used to build Tatoosh. In 1979 carbon fiber and composite materials used in jet aircraft, spacecraft, F1 race cars, and now in cutting edge racing yachts were still exotic. German explained that thin honeycomb composite deck was a key structural element in distributing the loads generated by the boat's enormous sail plan on the hull, keel and rudder. Yet a large sheet of it was about the weight corrugated cardboard.
Below deck, someone asked about the white 2 foot square box mounted on the cabin sole in the open area just aft of the mast. With a grin German said, "The head (toilet) is in the box. It's made of the same composites as the rest of the boat."
Just weeks later and still brand new, Tatoosh won the 1979 Annapolis Fall Series.
In the 1980 SORC (Southern Ocean Racing Conference) we won hotly competitive class B and we were 2nd in fleet to overall winner Acadia. https://rbsailing.blogspot.com/search?q=tatoosh
In the 1980 Bermuda Race we were second in class B to sister ship Merrythought.
In July 1980 Tatoosh was shipped to Puerto Cervo, Sardina to race on the U.S. Sardinia Cup team. I did not go to Sardinia. In September 1980 Tatoosh won the final Sardinia Cup race off Porto Cervo on corrected time making the United States the overall winners in the series over rival Sweden. https://www.britishpathe.com/asset/182242/
Bob’s wife Char, daughter Annie, and/or son Tommy were onboard for most or all races.
Tatoosh was sold in Europe after the 1980 Sardinia Cup series.
Tom Hutton is a VC in CA. He sails his Swan 57 out of Friday Harbor, WA.
